Name me another sport or competitive field in which the organisations pound for pound number one competitor would eagerly sit on the side-lines, waiting like a vulture, to potentially compete with another top talent, risking their entire name sake of being the best. Well, I present to you... mixed martial arts and more importantly, Alexander Volkanovski.
After teasing a move up to - the incredibly stacked - lightweight division for the better part of a year, it has been officially announced that the current UFC undisputed featherweight champion, Volkanovski, is set to be the back up fighter for the UFC 280 clash between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev on the 22nd October 2022. Alexander Volkanovski seemingly feels like he has a point to prove, after defeating his divisions biggest threats he now has his eyes on glory at 155 pounds; in turn granting him access to the extremely sparse 'champ-champ' club.
All being well, UFC fans should be treated to an absolute spectacle between two of the best fighters in the world but on the off chance that something goes terribly wrong (which isn't too uncommon in recent UFC events), then the fans, nay the world, will have nothing less than a barn burner on their screens.
