Shotokan Karate actually originated in Okinawa which is a small island south of Japan (yes the same place that The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi originated from).
Shotokan Karate was popularized in Japan by Gichin Funakoshi in the 1950s. Interestingly, the name "Shotokan" comes from the name "Shoto," which was Funakoshi's pen name, meaning 'waving or billowing pine'.
Shotokan Karate is a more traditional martial art. This means that improvements in a persons character and mental discipline / endurance are as important as physical ability and skill.
Like all martial arts, Shotokan Karate is meant to be accessible to all, including, women, children, and those with or without great athletic ability.
