Muay Thai is pretty brutal and one of the most effective martial arts to learn, and can be used in real life situations.
Historically Muay Thai fights have always used boxing gloves, but check this video out, MMA gloves are much better.
MMA gloves are safer than tradition boxing gloves, yes more surface wounds but there is less impact area and reduced risk of brain injury.

That is pretty cool - I think MMA gloves could bring a lot of mainstream fans over to watching Muay Thai!
