McGregor is still the money fight in the lightweight division, but is it the fight he wants?

So earlier today the ex lightweight UFC champion gave an interview with ESPN, "[Conor McGregor] would be a very good fight for me", "Regardless, if he’s coming from defeat or not, he’s a guy who’s made history, so I think it would be great, but it’s not just up to me.

If it were up to me, this fight would already be happening." It's no surprise that Charles "Do Bronx” has his sights set on his biggest pay day of his current roller-coaster career, but does "The notorious" McGregor feel the same? in his (McGregor) interview with "The maclife" back in March earlier on this year he stated, "Myself versus Usman for the 170-pound title in my comeback fight is the one I'm eyeballing at the minute.

Why cut the weight? I've already won the 155-pound title. I got myself to a lightweight frame, but you know, I'm big now. I feel big. I feel strong. I feel healthy. I've got good energy." Judging from his current physique and taking him at his word, at the current time of posting this, its hard to see him get back to that lean lightweight frame, when he could go and break another UFC record if he was to win the Welterweight belt, now saying that if by then Islam defeats Oliveira, that may give him that extra motivation to go try take the lightweight belt, from his old nemesis's (Khabib) best friend and life long teammate, if this fight happens that whole rivalry catches back on fire, quickly.

The fact I am writing an article on a fighter that hasn't won since early 2020, about him having options to choose from what belt he wants to shoot for next, shows the McGregor pulling power and stardom is still a real thing.

Let me know what you guys think, should he take the chance at welterweight and try become champion across 3 different weight divisions, or come back home to the stacked lightweight division, fight Islam or Charles to become the two time UFC lightweight champion ?.

McGregor really wants that historic moment, the only athlete to ever lift 3 titles across 3 weight divisions.

Can he do it? The easiest route in my opinion is the Do Bronx route, no disrespect and I’d have a different opinion if Usman wasn’t such a monster.

For some reason I feel like a win over Charles is more achievable than Islam.

I can’t see him coming down to 155 tho

Interesting take Lee, you see I'm the opposite, I give him more of a chance against usman than charles, but I definitely agree that beating Charles right now is more achievable than beating Islam.

The jujitsu game of do bronx is insane, last three fights mcgregor has been in the clinch/grapple position in all three fights, he's looked solid when he's in there (the infamous shoulder strikes), but that happens just the once with Charles, i do believe he will wrap him up and it will be game over, now with usman...he has fallen in love with his hands lately, so I do believe he would be more likely to try stand with mcgregor, then if mcgregor can rock usman, I believe he will likely finish him, however do bronx's will stand and trade with the best strikers, but as we've seen lately, it's when he's hurt he's most susceptible too pull of the win.

That's a really interesting take. I always get the impression with Do Bronx that when he goes down, he's ALWAYS faking it - his fight IQ is that high.. he knows he has perfected the ultimate routine, knows he takes a heavy shot, goes down on his back, opponent comes in, he submits them. He's a very very clever guy, sometimes he looks like he so ready for the taking, his opponents just can't help themselves, instincts just take over. I think his chin is rock solid, it's all an act.

Usman though, I dunno - I just feel like McGregor would gas out really quickly against him (due to his natural size and ability) and it would all be about maybe landing that perfect shot within the first 2 rounds. I think Usman could take his shots no problem and it ends up going to 4-5 where McGregors genetics means he slows down.

I think he's fighting a cobra against Do Bronx, he'll put him down for sure, depends if he then follows his instincts and goes all in, at which point Do Bronx sinks his fangs in.

I can't call either of them. Both would be amazing, as would Masvidal and Chandler. I do hope we see enough of him where he has all those fights, McGregor against Chandler, Masvidal, Do Bronx and Usman is a promoter and fan dream, all of them record breaking PPVs in the making.

As I write this, I couldn't care less about the Nate Diaz fight...

Great points mate, completely agree him vs usman he has two rounds. I don't understand for the life of me how we aren't getting mcgregor vs masvidal mate, another loss on either man's career isn't going to make a huge impact on their respected fan base, diaz vs dustin is the fight to make imo.

Maybe we do! Then that leads to another shot at the title? Leon Edwards has already (allegedly) stated that he is willing to give Masvidal a shout if he beats Usman. Love Leon Edwards, wish he were more well known here in the UK, he literally does no media.

Very interesting take, I'll probably do an article about it nearer the time, but I have been forever saying Leon beats usman 👀

Maybe we'll get to see him on The One Show or This Morning with Phil and Holly 😂

Seriously, though, how cool would it be if Leon Edwards is the next welterweight UFC champ? They do a welcoming home tour in Birmingham... I'll be there!

I have a mate from Warrington/Wigan who sounds just like Tom Aspinal, like you can’t tell the difference, hilarious.

He accent is awesome when speaking to Ariel Helwani on the zoom machine 😂😂😂
